iCloud, MobileMe, Lion & Snow Leopard

On June 8, 2011, in Featured, by Frank

On Monday, Apple announced iCloud, its new online cloud service, supporting email, photos, purchases, and backups. What was noted about the iOS 5 was the ability to create a free @me.com email address. When Apple released OS X Lion Developer Preview 4, they incorporated the iCloud service into the system making it a breeze to set it up. Unfortunately, Slow Leopard users and iOS 5 Beta testers don’t have access to the features Lion has. Many people would like the ability to set up their new free @me.com email inside of Mail.app on Snow Leopard. This neat little trick I discovered will allow you to get your new email set up and running on Snow Leopard. This trick does require you to have already setup iCloud on your iOS 5 Beta. There is no way to create an iCloud on Snow Leopard or Lion right now. Before proceeding make sure your running iOS 5 and have already set up iCloud.

Update: I guess some people were alerted about the iCloud me.com email password. Anyways, the password is the exact same as your Apple ID password.

First off, fire up Mail and visit Preferences. At the top there will be these tabs

Click on Accounts.

Down at the bottom of the window there will be two buttons, a + and -

Click the + button

A sheet should appear showing this:

Fill it out with your info and then hit create. You will receive an error saying that it couldn’t reach the mail.me.com server, just ignore it and hit continue. At this part, it should be very similar to setting up a regular IMAP email. I can’t show you the next screen on setting up the incoming and outgoing servers as Lion doesn’t let me because of the support for iCloud. What you will need to do is change the drop down menu from the top (Currently saying: MobileMe) to IMAP, and changing the mail.me.com to

‘p02-imap.mail.me.com’

Update: Some People haven’t had success using the above server so try this one if the one above fails.

‘p08-imap.mail.me.com’

the username should just be the name before the @me.com and the password, or course, your password. Hit continue and it will verify everything, you might receive another warning of some sort, I didn’t but it has happened for some absurd reason. Nest up is the outgoing mail server. All that is needed here is one line. It would most likely be already there, but if it isn’t, the out going mail server is: ‘smtp.me.com’ Hit continue again and it will bring you to the completed screen saying something about everything being correct and just hit “Take Account Online” or “Continue”, not sure what the button is right now.

Thats it, if you have questions let me know by @mentioning me on twitter. You can find me as @Frankrockz

The above process also works using the third-part app Sparrow.

Awesome! Now all I need is a way to get contacts and calendars working…

Is there any way to create that free me.com account without having a device with the iOS5 beta?

I have leopard and i have upgraded my iPad for iCloud. I am iPhone developer and I want to develop basic application which integrates iCloud Api. Can any one help me out as I m confused.. Will it work with my leopard? Can I develop the application of iCloud on leopard or I have to upgrade my leopard to Lion?

Due to iCloud being a new specify feature to iOS 5 and Lion, I don’t see apple placing any SDK iOS 5 and iCloud for iOS/Mac in the near future. You will have to upgrade to Lion to take advantage of the iCloud SDK for Mac.

It seems to set up no problem, however when sending a message i get:

Lovely. Thank you! I got free @me.com account during the upgrade to iOS5 on my iPhone4 but still use Snow Leopard on my white MacBook 13″. There currently seems little point upgrading to Lion until I update my hardware.

  • JerryF

This did not work for me until I used CocoaPacketAnalyzer to see what my iPod connects to, which turned out to be
    p08-imap.mail.me.com
I also had to set my Keychain Access prefs for Certificates back to the weaker defaults of “Best Attempt”

  • http://twitter.com/magiciansoft Magician Software

I assume iCloud has different incoming and outgoing servers and uses the one best for you. Glad you figured it out though.

It works on my iPhone 3GS. It works on my iPad.

I can send on Thunderbird. But I can’t receive mail. I get Wrong Password error on Thunderbird, the same password I’m sending with

Since apple isn’t accepting new mobileme accounts any work around this?  I use snow leopard currently and just got the new iphone 4s.  trying to figure out a work around..if possible. anyone?

  • Bla

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

  • mac

I switched over all macs and ipads and iphones to lion, but my work mac is still on snow leopard. I have been having horrible problems with my “to do” list which has conflicts between Mail and iCal, anyway, I tried going to MobileMe, and that site simply took me to iCloud automatically, and iCloud just works now– on Snow Leopard.

  • Edwinbramos

Great job Frank, I’m on an old PPC running Leopard, was a paid Mobileme.com customer with a family pack, since converting my account, I had no problem with mail, but, upon canceling the mobileme.com account, my mail in leopard, which was linked to mobileme stopped working, but, you work around, got my mail back on leopard, all I need now is a way workaround  to link my address book and calendar to iCloud…

  • Peter Windle

What I’d really like to see is how to share content (music, photos etc) from Snow Leopard to Lion.
It makes me angry that Apple does not allow this to happen. Lion breaks too many things for me to upgrade, so for me, I am stuck.

    Solution :

set a new account (+) (in prefs on mail.app)
set the new account to IMAP (this is important)
    incoming Mail Server : imap.mail.me.com
    outgoing : p04-smtp.mail.me.com
    user : yourname@me.com
    SSL on (port 993)

May i know whats the maximum capacity of the email iCloud server can go ?

  • http://twitter.com/dJDragon7k Aralia AlmendralTodd

5GB and you can buy more storage.

  • http://twitter.com/dJDragon7k Aralia AlmendralTodd

icloud.com has full compatible access on snow leopard and there is a rumor about 10.6.9 bringing iCloud support to Snow leopard, probably nothing Leopard though. Apple is pretty good about supporting there legacy users.

Try Office in Windows 7 bootcamp. iCloud works perfectly.
